Welcome to my blog about my experiences on a medical mission to Nepal. I am fortunate to be part of a medical team going to a small hospital outside Kathmandu. The purpose of the mission will be to provide cleft lip and palate surgeries for children in Nepal.
The hospital where the team we will be working is called : HRDC – The Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children. The HRDC is shown in the photo to the left. A quote from the HRDC website, "HRDC is a program of a non-governmental organization, the Friends of the Disabled. It is the only tertiary level hospital in the country located in Banepa which provides the best reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation for children below 16 years of age. Its services are aimed at under privileged physically challenged children in Nepal."
The hospital website is: http://www.hrdcnepal.org/main.shtml
I will be going with a team from the organization Rotaplast International. A philanthropy founded by Dr. Angelo Capozzi, MD, a plastic surgeon from San Francisco who is currently head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Shriners Hospital in Sacramento, California. The organization sponsors over 15 medical missions a years to countries all over the world to provide free surgical care to children in developing nations. Rotaplast is funded by Rotary Club international and private donations. The local rotary clubs where the missions are targeted also donate money, time, and other resources to the visiting teams.
The Rotaplast website: http://www.rotaplast.org/
The website describes the Rotaplast philosophy and has links to numerous past missions. Check it out.
